Announcing the IEEE 1858 Image Rank Study

For heavily post-processed photos, the best-looking image and the most realistic image often require different levels of processing. Image Rank is an online study from the IEEE 1858 Camera Perceptual Image Quality (CPIQ) working group. We are seeking both imaging experts and laypeople to help inform our understanding of image processing preferences.

Participants view 54 photographs from the MIT-Adobe FiveK dataset: 27 sharpened, 27 HDR tone-mapped. Each is rendered at 19 levels, from unprocessed original to excessively processed. Sharpening sweeps unsharp-mask sigma and amount; HDR sweeps three tone-mapping parameters. For every image, observers independently mark the most realistic and their favorite. We collect demographic data about participants to support subgroup analysis.
