This recommended practice is applicable to vital safety related applications with COTS-ESS (such as safety positioning based on Global Navigation Satellite System and electronic beacon) for onboard and wayside equipment in high-speed train and maglev. This recommended practice does not impose constraints on Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Electronic system &amp; software itself. The recommended practice does not require COTS-ESS to meet specific safety requirements for rail. Instead, the recommended practice achieves fault detection and safety response through specialized safety monitoring and other means.
