IEEE ICES
International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety (ICES) Standards Committee

Who We Are

IEEE International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety (ICES) is a standards development committee under the auspices of the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA). We are a group of individuals with strong interest in safety as it relates to electromagnetic fields (EMF). ICES consists of two Technical Committees, TC95 and TC34. The focus of TC95 is the development of standards related to defining safe limits for exposure to EMFs, while TC34 is focused on standards related to the assessment of compliance with EMF exposure limits for electronic products. Our present membership comprises well more than 100 individuals with expertise across a broad spectrum of specialties including engineering, biology, electromagnetics, instrumentation and measurements of EMF, public health, safety, EMF dosimetry, safety programs, compliance assessment, hazard communications, etc. Our members constitute those from academia, government, the military, industry, medicine, consulting, among others.

Membership in ICES is open to anyone with material interest in our committee, regardless of whether they are members of the IEEE. The only requirement for IEEE membership is associated with voting on IEEE developed standards when a draft standard has been forwarded to IEEE SA for balloting. Hence, while IEEE membership is not a requirement for participation, we encourage joining the IEEE.

Our membership remains quite stable over time with some members having participated for more than 50 years. Although most members are well seasoned in their careers, ICES is always on the lookout for new, younger participants who can contribute to our work. We work with a philosophy that multiple viewpoints on any particular issue help ensure that whatever the standards product we are delivering will represent the best of scientific judgment.
