2024 ICICLE Conference on Learning Engineering

Solving for Complexity at Scale

The ICICLE’s Learning Engineering conference, co-hosted with ASU Learning Engineering Institute, revolved around the overarching theme of “Solving for Complexity at Scale,” focusing on solving the implicit complexity of learning challenges at different scales, from the individual tutor to massive open online courses and everything in between.

The ICICLE 2024 Learning Conference Workbook has descriptions of the all conference sessions which were a blend of theoretical insights and practical applications across topics related to the learning engineering process, learning sciences, learning analytics, cognitive science, teamwork, technology innovations, and human-centered learning. Engaging sessions, such as Lightning Talks, Show and Share Presentations, Active Learning Sessions, Stations of Exploration, and Showcase Your Work, actively involved participants and contributed to the advancement of learning engineering. This was not a ‘Sit and Get’ conference, people were engaged!

Our keynote speaker was Punya Mishra, Director of Innovative Learning Futures at the Learning Engineering Institute (LEI) and Professor in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. In his role as director, he provides strategic vision around research, program development, outreach and public engagement. Prior to this he served as the Associate Dean of Scholarship & Innovation at MLFTC, he led a range of initiatives that provides a future-forward, equity driven, approach to inter/trans-disciplinary educational research. He is internationally recognized for his work in educational technology; the role of creativity and aesthetics in learning; and the application of collaborative, design-based approaches to educational innovation.

The conference aimed to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange by providing a platform for attendees to share their work, learn from others’ experiences, pose questions, and broaden their understanding of learning engineering as well as build a vibrant learning engineering community that extends beyond the conference itself. Whether you were a seasoned practitioner, a scholar, or a curious learner, ICICLE’s 2024 Learning Engineering conference provided a unique opportunity to delve into the multifaceted world of learning engineering.
