ICICLE Update and February 2026 Community Call with Jeremy Roschelle, Executive Director of Learning Science Research at Digital Promise, for a discussion on implications of AI in Learning Engineering

The ICICLE monthly community call is February 18th at 12pm ET. We’re thrilled to have Dr. Jeremy Roschelle, Executive Director of Learning Science Research at Digital Promise, join the community call this month as our guest speaker. At the community call, Dr. Roschelle will share with us “A ridiculously short discussion of the implications of AI for Learning Engineering.

Dr.  Roschelle conducts research on the future of learning with technology and is currently the leader of several AI in Education R&D projects. He is Fellow of the International Society of the Learning Sciences, has served as a subject matter expert on Artificial Intelligence to the US Department of Education and is on the Advisory Committee for Education at the National Science Foundation.

Bring your questions, check out the suggested readings below, and share your thoughts and experiences at the community call!

We’ll be meeting via Webex for the community call. (See details below with meeting code and password.) It is scheduled for one hour’s length. Full agenda will be posted here.

Recommended Readings from this month’s Guest Speaker

Beyond Benchmarks: Responsible AI in Education Needs Learning Sciences by Jeremy Roschelle, Elizabeth A. McLaughlin, and Kenneth R. Koedinger advocates for the inclusion of learning scientists in the development process to make sense of theory and data. They have three recommendations:

  • Focus on Learning,
  • Involve Experts to Get the Science Right
  • Apply Iterative Data-Driven Learning Engineering

The blog post, From Questions to Claims: How AI Intersects with Scientific Practice, explains that scientific practice is entering a new phase where AI-driven, data-intensive methods help surface patterns and inform hypotheses, but people remain essential to ask good questions, interpret results, and evaluate evidence in science.

Adapting Learning Engineering in a Global Context

The next Invitation to Learning Engineering in our webinar series will be hosted by the IEEE ICICLE Globalisation Special Interest Group as we explore applying learning engineering within a global contextCarolina Ali Fojaco, Chief Learning Officer at Project Alianza, will provide a deep dive on how they used learning engineering to iterate and scale AnGo, an offline, AI-assisted literacy app to help children in Central America build foundational reading skills.

Register for the webinar happening on Wednesday, February 25th at 12PM ET/9AM PT.

Special and Market Interest Group Work
