ICICLE
International Consortium for Innovation and Collaboration in Learning Engineering

Newsletter – 2021 March

ICICLE Participants,

The ICICLE monthly community call is March 17th at 12 pm ET. We’re excited to have Meg Benner, Managing Director at The Learning Agency, join us. She’ll be speaking on The Learning Agency’s strategy and priorities on learning engineering and the Futures Forum on Learning‘s Tools Competition to accelerate learning recovery and advance the field of learning engineering. The winners were recently announced.
.
We’ll be meeting via Webex (See details below with meeting code and password). The call is scheduled for one hour’s length. Full agenda will be posted here.

Learning Engineering Updates
At the February community call meeting, Bob Sottilare spoke about the Adaptive Instructional Systems (AIS) Consortium. Here is his presentation, Everything you wanted to know about the Adaptative Instructional Systems Consortium…Frequently Asked Questions.

Teaching Online Preparation Toolkit (TOPkit), hosted by the University of Central Florida, has several things happening around learning engineering. The theme for TOPkit’s March Digest is Learning Engineering, curated by James Paradiso from ICICLE Design SIG. On March 25th at the TOPkit Workshop on Charting the Course for the Next Generation, Ellen Wagner, Chair of ICICLE Learning Engineering as a Profession SIG, will give the keynote address, and Jim Goodell and Aaron Kessler, SIG Competency and Design Chairs, are invited speakers.

Rachel Van Campenhout, who presented to ICICLE in November 2020 about a learning engineering case study, and Benny Johnson, both with Acrobatiq by VitalSource, did a Q&A on impactful learning, with a shout-out to learning engineering.

Learning engineering is an interactive process. Duolingo, the language-learning app, runs 100s of experiments concurrently.  For every experiment, an memo is submitting of consisting a hypothesis; an outcome; links to related work; audience selection; and design and interaction specs. Read more about the testing culture and pros and cons here.

The IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies have a call for papers for a special issue on Designing Technologies to Support Professional and Workplace Learning for Situated Practice. Abstract submission is April 15th, 2021.

Have you listened to the IEEE Learning Engineering Podcast yet? The first episode explored What is Learning Engineering? Listen to it on your favorite podcast platform: SpotifyAppleSticher or tell “Alexa, play the Learning Engineering Podcast.”

SIGs
We welcome everyone’s participation in the SIGs. The Competencies, Curriculum, and Credentials SIG is compiling learning engineering related competencies. The next meeting is scheduled on Friday, April 9th at 3pm ET.  Meeting link is in SIG notes.

The Corporate MIG (market interest group) connects groups interested in or applying learning engineering. Links to recordings and documentation are in the meeting notes. Please contact Jessie Chuang for more information.

The Design SIG is sharing experiences and examples of the application of ICICLE‘s Learning Engineering Process Model. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th at 2 pm. Meeting link is in the Agenda and Meeting Notes.

The Tools SIG is preparing a brief to discuss what instrumentation is and how to do it. The next meeting is Thursday, March 25th at 2 pm ET. Meeting link is in the Agenda and Meeting Notes.

Join the community call on March 17th with Meg Benner speaking about learning engineering at The Learning Agency. Let us know what you are doing and what your thoughts are on learning engineering at the monthly meetingLinkedInTwitter or contact us.

Thank You!
