ICICLE
International Consortium for Innovation and Collaboration in Learning Engineering

Newsletter – 2021 October

ICICLE Participants,

The ICICLE monthly community call is October 20th at 12pm ET. We excited to have this month Grady Hillhouse, a civil engineer and science communicator known for his educational video series, Practical Engineering, as a guest speaker. At the meeting, we will tackle how we communicate that Learning Engineering is a type of engineering, particularly to those who are part of the historically accepted engineering disciplines.

Practical Engineering is one of the largest engineering channels on YouTube with over 2 million subscribers and millions of views each month. Grady Hillhouse is committed to educating lay people about engineering. His videos, which focus on infrastructure and the human-made world around us, have been featured in Make Magazine, Hackaday, Gizmodo, and on the Science Channel and Discovery Channel. Before producing videos full-time, Hillhouse spent nine years in private consulting, working on a wide variety of infrastructure projects.

Check out these two episodes for types of videos that Practical Engineering has:

Be part of the conversation at the community call and connect with Grady Hillhouse, a civil engineer and science communicator, on Wednesday, October 20th. We’ll be meeting via Webex (See details below with meeting code and password). The call is scheduled for one hour’s length. Full agenda will be posted here.

SIG Meetings
SIGs meet monthly. We welcome everyone’s participation in the SIGs!

Design SIG will meet on Tuesday, October 25th at 2pm ET to talk about all things design. Meeting link is in the Agenda and Meeting Notes.

Tools SIG will meet on Thursday, October 28th at 2pm ET. Join the SIG and contribute to an instrumentation primer paper and a LE Maturity Model. Meeting link is in the Agenda and Meeting Notes.

Corporate MIG (market interest group) will meet Friday, October 29th at 10am ET here on Zoom for a roundtable discussion around the topic, How has corporate investment in L&D changed post COVID-19, with several people sharing case studies. Please contact SIG Chair for more information.

Higher Education MIG (market interest group) is now active! It meets on the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is November 2nd at 12pm ET. Contact the SIG chair for the Zoom link or be to be added to the calendar invite.

Competencies, Curriculum, and Credentials SIG will meet on Friday, November 12th. Meeting link is in SIG notes. The SIG is leading an effort, as part of ICICLE‘s commitment to the Data Science for Everyone‘s campaign, to define data science competencies within our learning engineering competency framework. Do you have ideas or suggestions? Please join the SIG meeting or contact the SIG chair with your recommendations. We want to learn from you!

Join this exciting community call on October 20th to hear from Grady Hillhouse from Practical Engineering and talk about how we can best communicate that learning engineering is a type of engineering.  It’ll be a great discussion!

Share at the community call about the work that you are doing in learning engineering, post on LinkedIn or contact us. We want to hear from you.

Thank you,

Michael Jay
