IEEE P1409 Power Quality Solutions Working Group

The IEEE PES Working Group on Power Quality Solutions is drafting a revision of IEEE Std 1409-2012. The new edition of the IEEE 1409 guide will provide an overview of devices, technology methods, and appropriate circuit configurations used as solutions in electric power systems for the purpose of mitigating power quality problems including voltage sags, harmonic distortion, voltage imbalance, and voltage fluctuations. This new guide will include definitions, general need guidelines, performance objectives, electrical environments, input/output criteria, performance measurements, case studies, bibliography, economic assessment, and engineering trade-offs. The document addresses power quality assessment techniques from IEEE Std 1250-2018, which defines power quality terms and phenomena, and from IEEE Std 1159-2019, which provides a recommended practice for measuring power quality.

The kick-off meeting for the revision project was in January 2021. The working group will meet two to four times per year until the revision is complete. The revision is due by December 2024. The ballot draft is expected to be completed by January 2024.
