IEEE-1588 provides inclusive language with the IEEE 1588g-2022 amendment

With the publication of IEEE 1588g-2022 amendment, the IEEE-1588 standard provides inclusive language that should be used instead of the “master” and “slave” terminology, if these terms are to be avoided.

This amendment is important to ensure consistency of terminology across different industries and standards using the Precision Time Protocol defined by IEEE 1588.

The terms to be used are

  • “timeTransmitter” instead of “master”, and
  • “timeReceiver” instead of “slave”.
