Scope: Artificial Intelligence Systems (AIS) is one of the recent initiatives of the IEEE Standards Association in exploring rapidly evolving technologies, fostering responsible innovation, and consensus building via an open, transparent, and proven process.

As Artificial Intelligence Systems continue advancing from research labs to pilot deployments in the rail industry, the IEEE VTS Communications-Based Train Control and Signals Standards Committee (VT/CBTC&SIG SC) discussed the need and the possibilities of standardization of domain specific applications of the AIS and decided to form a Project Authorization Request (PAR) Study Group. The AI PAR Study Group will provide recommendations to the VT/CBTC&SIG SC as to whether the standardization project(s) should be undertaken for the domain-specific applications related to:

• Communications-Based Train Control systems and technologies; and
• Railway signaling systems.

Individuals actively involved in the development and/or implementation of the AI systems in the rail industry are encouraged to participate in the AI PAR Study Group.
