IEEE P7014.1 Recommended Practice for Ethical Considerations of Emulated Empathy in Partner-based General-Purpose Artificial Intelligence Systems
Scope
This recommended practice defines ethical considerations and good practices regarding the use of emulated empathy in general-purpose artificial intelligence systems for human-AI partnerships. This includes general-purpose artificial intelligence products marketed as empathic partners, personal AI, co-pilots, assistants, and related phrasing for human-AI partnering.
Purpose
The purpose of this recommended practice is to provide clear and practical ethical recommendations for the conception, design and lifecycle of general-purpose artificial intelligence applications that emulate empathic abilities to enable human-AI partnerships.
PAR form
For more official background on the standard, view the project authorization request (PAR), which was approved 21 Mar 2024.
Background
IEEE P7014.1 follows on from the work of the base standard IEEE 7014™ Standard for Ethical considerations in Emulated Empathy in Autonomous and Intelligent Systems.
These standards, and others in the IEEE 70XX series and more, are all part of the IEEE Global Initiative On Ethics Of Autonomous And Intelligent Systems. This includes the founding document, Ethically Aligned Design.
Working Group Meetings
The group’s official meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 14:00 UTC, unless stated otherwise. Meetings are scheduled for 90 minutes.
Meetings are conducted via conference call. The link (and confirmation of time) are distributed to our group’s email reflector in advance of each meeting.
Get Involved
IEEE standards are built on consensus, through the efforts of working groups that are open to all. If you feel you can contribute to this important work, please get onboard. We appreciate that you might not have time to attend regular calls but there are other ways to contribute. Connect with the group via one or more of the following:
1) Speak to any of the WG officers (Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary) to discuss collaboration – see right sidebar for contact details.
2) Register your interest in the group on IEEE MyProject (you will need an account). Go to Menu > Manage Profiles & Interests, then search for 7014.1.
3) You can follow the group via our IEEE ListServ Public Email Reflector (note: we do not spam this channel, only WG call details, minutes, agendas and major announcements).
To subscribe to the Public Email Reflector, please only send an email to ListServ@ieee.org, containing the following text in the body of the message:
subscribe STDS-P7014-1 YourFirstName YourLastName
Subscribe note 1: Use of the e-mail subscribe instruction requires that you supply your First Name followed by your Last Name and will subscribe the e-mail address from which the e-mail is sourced from. The e-mail subscribe instruction does not support an e-mail address field, if you try to use an e-mail address in the Name fields it will be rejected. If you wish to subscribe an e-mail address other than the one which your e-mail is sourced from, for example, the IEEE e-mail alias my.name@ieee.org, you will need to use the ListServ web interface. Use of this web interface will require the creation of a login but once this login has been created it will be used for all IEEE ListServ subscriptions you wish to manage.
