The 5th IEEE-DCSC plenary and working group meetings successfully held

The 5th IEEE Computer Society/Data Compression Standards Committee (IEEE-DCSC) plenary meeting and working group meetings were held from Dec 8th to 11th, 2020. Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, the meetings have been held online.

The meetings lasted for 5 days and strictly followed the IEEE international meeting requirement. From Dec 8th to 11th, all the working groups and sub-working groups under the IEEE-DCSC held inter-meetings discussing collected proposals, the progress of the project and the future development plans. Besides, the IEEE-DCSC’s plenary meeting was held on the afternoon of Dec 11th.

Up to now, there are 2 working groups and 1 study group under the IEEE-DCSC. The IEEE AI Model Representation, Compression, Distribution and Management Working Group (P2941-WG) held the project kick-off meeting. At the meeting, the P2941-WG Chair Dr. Yonghong Tian announced that Dr. Chao Yang will be the Vice Chair. In addition, P2941-WG members fully discussed the two proposals received and formulated the key research direction at the present stage. The IEEE Audio Video Coding Working Group (1857-WG) discussed 118 proposals in total during the meeting and 36 proposals have been approved. The IEEE Future Video Coding Study Group (FVC-SG) received 5 proposals this time. Dr. Dong Liu as the FVC-SG Chair hosted the meeting and discussed the proposals with group members. The IEEE FVC-SG planned to organize the offline centralized development in the near future to promote technology exploration and integration.

The IEEE-DCSC plenary meeting was hosted by Committee Chair Dr. Feng Wu. During the meeting, all the working groups concluded the group meeting result, and then the committee approved the following resolutions:

  • Approved to start the standard project P2941.1 with the PAR draft. It is expected that the standard P2941.1 will be widely used by AI-related operators, supporting data processing of various types, sizes, storage formats, devices, and precision.
  • Approved to revise the standard 1857, 1857a, 1857.2 and 1857.3.
  • Approved the request of the FVC-SG to postpone their deadline for one year.

At the end of the meeting, Committee Chair Dr. Feng Wu emphasized that the existing working groups and study group should promote the standardization and application of data compression constantly. At the same time, P2941-WG as a new working group is encouraged to make effort specifically in AI-related industry, acting as a guide role to ensure the sustainable development in AI-related industry.

The next meeting is scheduled to be held in Hainan, China on March 20th, 2020. We welcome your participation.
