The 6th IEEE Computer Society/Data Compression Standards Committee (IEEE-DCSC) plenary meeting and working group meetings were held from Mar 15th to 19th, 2021. DCSC responded positively to the pandemic control policy, and the meeting was held online.
The meetings lasted for 5 days and strictly followed the IEEE international meeting requirement. From Mar 15th to 19th, all the working groups and sub-working groups under the IEEE-DCSC held inter-meetings discussing collected proposals, the progress of the project and the future development plans. Besides, the IEEE-DCSC’s plenary meeting was held on the afternoon of Mar 19th.
Up to now, there are 2 working groups and 1 study group under the IEEE-DCSC. All the working groups concluded the group meeting result as follows:
The IEEE Audio Video Coding Working Group (1857-WG) has 2 active sub-working groups currently. The 1857.9 sub-working group discussed 2 proposals during the meeting and 1 proposal has been adopted. The 1857.10 sub-working group has made significant progress in standard development and is expected to improve the performance of general video coding and screen content (TGM, MC) coding.
The IEEE AI Model Representation, Compression, Distribution and Management Working Group (P2941-WG) held the 2nd Plenary meeting. In addition, P2941.1’s team has submitted the PAR to NesCom for the formal establishment of a sub-working group, which will be reviewed at the NesCom meeting this month.
The IEEE Future Video Coding Study Group (FVC-SG) received and discussed 9 proposals focusing on the explorative experiments upon NIC. FVC-SG plans to continue the explorative experiments to improve the compression performance and reduce the encoding/decoding complexity.
The IEEE-DCSC plenary meeting was hosted by Committee Chair Dr. Feng Wu, and the working groups reported the progress of the stage and had a full discussion on the topics received. The Committee approved a motion during the meeting: Approved the PAR draft to revise the standard P1857 and P1857.3.
The high quality of this conference cannot be achieved without the efforts and support from the Committee and all working group members. In the future, the standards working and study groups will continue to promote the development or revision of standards in the field of data compression, which will contribute to the high-quality development of the data compression industry.
The next meeting is scheduled to be held in Hainan, China on June 19th, 2021. Please follow this official account and the working group’s official website for more information.
Special thanks to Meng Zhao, the Senior Standards Manager from the IEEE Beijing Representative office, for her guidance on the IEEE International Standard Meeting process.
