The ICICLE monthly community call is June 23rd at 12pm ET. In this month’s ICICLE Community Call, you are our guest speakers. We want to hear from each of you on what makes you a Learning Engineer and how you are engaged in learning engineering. We want to hear feedback on ICICLE and what interests you to attend meetings. Feel free to prepare or just speak off-the-cuff for no more that 1-2 minutes. We are looking forward to listening to you!

The Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN) launched its inaugural State of XR & Immersive Learning Outlook Report 2021. ICICLE, Learning Guild, EDUCAUSE and CoSN were partners in the publication. The Outlook Report showcases current and emerging trends and innovations on the use of XR and immersive technologies for supporting learning. The report, High-Leverage Opportunities for Learning Engineering, written by Ryan S. Baker and Ulrich Boser, discusses the potential of learning engineering to bring the theory and practice of learning forward as well as some of the challenges that have slowed uptake of learning engineering, and how they can be addressed.

Data for Science Commitment
ICICLE’s commitment to the Data Science for Everyone‘s campaign to expand access to data science education was accepted. The campaign has over 250 commitments. Our commitment is “to define data science competencies in a learning engineering competency framework by the end of 2021.” What would you suggest as competencies The Competencies, Curriculum and Credentials SIG will be leading our commitment. We’d love your help. Come to the next meeting on July 9th or contact the SIG chair.
To launch this next phase of the commitment campaign, the Data Science for Everyone Commitments Event is taking place on June 28th from12-4pm ET to discuss data science education and network with other coalition-members.
Learning Engineering Tools Competition
Futures Forum on Learning‘s 2021 Learning Engineering Tools Competition, sponsored by Schmidt Futures, will kick off on July 7th from 12:00-1:30pm ET. Key themes include accelerated learning, assessment, adult learning, and research-driven experimentation.
Have you participated in the “What do Learning Engineers Do” survey? Many thanks to those that have! If you can’t make it to this month’s community call to tell us how you use learning engineering, please complete the survey. It’s for a project that we are doing with the University of Dayton to better understand the job duties, tasks, and perceptions of learning engineers across various contexts and workplaces.
June has been a month of conferences. At the International Society of Learning Sciences conference ICICLE members had a workshop, Bringing Applied Learning Sciences to Your Institution, on designing learning engineering programs. At Learning@Scale, ICICLE members led a discussion on Learning Engineering at Scale. At the Artificial Intelligence for Education, IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee organized a workshop on Advancing AI-Powered Education through Industry-Academia Cooperation
SIGs meet monthly. We welcome everyone’s participation in the SIGs. It’s been great to see new faces at recent SIG meetings! Please come to any or all of them.
